BIO

Janelle Schneider is a multi-disciplinary visual artist who lives and maintains her studio practice in the Portland, Oregon area. She has been painting using oils and acrylics most of her life. Janelle is an alumna of Pacific Northwest College of Art, where she earned her BFA in Graphic Design and was honored to be recognized with “Best of Design, Faculty Choice” and “Outstanding Design Thesis” awards.

Janelle’s current paintings are figurative expressions in acrylic exploring themes of memory, connection, identity and belonging.
Her curiosity and tender heart support her ability to see commonalities before differences. The act of creating opens up a liminal space to process and relate to the world around her.

Embracing processes that leverage digital tools with traditional methods, Janelle uses a moleskin sketchbook and iPad Procreate app to iterate ideas and adjust compositions, colors, light effects, then brings the ideas using acrylic to canvas or birch panels. Painting is an escape and she loses herself in the process; creating, questioning, bringing feelings and ideas to the canvas.

Janelle’s work has shown in the Portland, San Francisco Bay and L.A. areas and is held in private collections worldwide.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Ahead of the pandemic, during a span of about three years my time was marked by the death of 4 loved ones in quick succession. The grief broke me open, and I existed in a place beyond words. I experienced a deep re-evaluation, a re-prioritization of what is truly meaningful. Then I started painting again.

Working through my grief and finding solace in an archive of inherited family photos, the first painting was of a loved one and I in the snow. Then I painted another, and another, until I had captured each of my four lost loved ones in a memory, each an ordinary moment in time through the lens of my emotions. Working on these canvases helped me sit with and process my grief, and they eventually became a celebration, a requiem.

After spending some time in this personal focus and healing my gaze extended outward. I found familiarity and tendrils of a broader human commonality through random thrifted photos and was surprised and deeply inspired by this. Working with both physical and digital tools I like to try new things, play with ideas, adjust compositions, colors, light effects, then bring the rough sketches with acrylic to canvas or birch panels.

In each composition, I contemplate the subjects as individuals; imagining/remembering what their lived stories were, then bring to life and celebrate ordinary moments for the viewer to contemplate their own associations.

Thanks for your interest in my work.

A portfolio of my paintings for the Suit of Wands in the Science Tarot Project, and images from our launch party at the California Academy of Sciences.

One through ten card designs were painted using Photoshop, and the face cards were painted using acrylic mixed media on 24x36 inch canvases. For the launch party display I bound the four paintings together at the corners, and displayed on a raised central pedestal. There were also two stations with glowing light cube stands on which rested view master viewers containing the card art .
