ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings are figurative expressions in acrylic exploring the intersection of emotion, memory and connection. Between memory and a dream.

During 2013 - 2016 my time was marked by the losses of 4 loved ones in quick succession. The grief broke me open, and I existed in a place beyond words. I experienced deep re-evaluation, a re-prioritization of what is truly meaningful. Then I started painting again.

Working through my grief and finding solace in an archive of inherited family photos, the first painting was of a loved one and I in the snow. Then I painted another, and another, until I had captured each of my four lost loved ones in a memory, each an ordinary moment in time. Working on these canvases helped me sit with and process my grief, and they became a celebration, a requiem.

After spending some time in this personal focus and healing I began to expand my gaze and look outward. I started finding random thrifted photos and was surprised and deeply inspired by finding familiarity, what felt like tendrils of a broader human connection.

Curiosity and inner vision drive me to learn, communicate ideas and find commonalities. It's through the act of creating that I am able to process and relate to the world around me, experiencing life through the lens of possibility and connection. I paint ordinary moments as a window for the viewer’s curiosity, imagination and empathy to find connection.

Thank you for your interest in my work.

BIO

I'm a Portland-based visual artist (and native Oregonian) with a BFA in Graphic Design from Pacific Northwest College of Art.

My paintings are figurative expressions in acrylic exploring the intersection of emotion, memory and connection. It is through working with the paint, balancing color and light that I both explore and share the subtleties of relationship. I paint ordinary moments as a window for the viewer’s curiosity, imagination and empathy to find connection.

Themes of connection, it's counterpoint disconnection, and duality are usually present in my work. Image and the tactility of the paint and surface express my thoughts and feelings much more completely than my words can. My choice of color palettes and treatment of light express my feelings about the work as I paint, my interest is in the expression of emotion and relation of forms, either to each other, the relationship between subject and environment and the viewer with the work.

My work is held in private collections across the United States and abroad.

A portfolio of my paintings for the Suit of Wands in the Science Tarot Project, and images from our launch party at the California Academy of Sciences.

One through ten card designs were painted using Photoshop, and the face cards were painted using acrylic mixed media on 24x36 inch canvases. For the launch party display I bound the four paintings together at the corners, and displayed on a raised central pedestal. There were also two stations with glowing light cube stands on which rested view master viewers containing the card art .
